Foam Blocks for the Littles!

When I was growing up, my parents owned several child care centers, and one of the features that always stuck out to me was the manipulatives area or as my mother called it, the fine motor skills area. That was the area where the kids could find all kinds of toys to play with; counting bears, pegboards, building blocks, etc. I remember how much fun the kids used to have when they hit that rotation with their class. I also remember exactly how much those wooden blocks hurt if one was tossed carelessly about. I now have a similar area in the house for my kids, with one exception…we use foam blocks instead!

We have had several sets of foam blocks over the years; many of them getting lost when moving or becoming an unsuspecting play toy to the family pet. So when Premium Joy reached out to me to see if I would be interested in letting my littles play with their set of foam blocks, you know I said yes!

The blocks arrived in a see-through case, and my almost 4-year-old squealed with delight when she saw them. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think wooden building blocks are great, but when you have hard floors, 3 crazy kittens, and kids that like to stack and destroy? Well, things get loud, messy, and hurtful really fast! So, foam blocks work best for us. Additionally, they are great for sensory play because they are soft and squishy!

I am really impressed with this set from Premium Joy, the blocks are well made, and come with all of the traditional shapes that you would find in a set of wooden building blocks. Fat and skinny rectangles, squares, triangles, arches, and cylinders. They make for lots of building fun, and my kids, who range in age from almost 4 to 13, can spend good quality time building with each other. You know that makes this mama happy!

This set has 68 total pieces, and are made from high-quality, high-density foam, and come in 6 colors, so if you are helping your little one learn their shapes and colors, this foam block set could come in handy! I think we pull this set out AT LEAST once a day, if not more, and every time the building becomes higher, or more complex as my youngest discovers new ways of stacking them.

I love watching her curiosity and creativeness take over, as she builds a house around a sleepy kitten or a bed for her dolls. I see how excited she gets when she shows me a block and tells me the shape and/or color, and gets it right. I watch her separate the foam blocks by color, or by shape, and count them, then I watch as she becomes a monster so she can smash the buildings…much to the disappointment of her brother and sister; but it is all in good fun.

What I do know for certain, is that we will likely have a set of foam blocks in our house for the long haul because they are a great way to spend quality family time together, they assist in learning, and on a side note…have you ever rolled a sore foot over a foam block? I am just saying, there is relief in those blocks!
