Where to start?

Your first step as a budding mompreneur is researching what type of business you’d like to start. It’s a good idea to pick something that sparks genuine interest for you, whether it’s writing, tutoring, or working in software development.

Once you’ve decided what type of business you’d like to start, the next step is conducting research. Check out thriving businesses that you’d consider your competition, and take notes about what makes them successful. It’s not a bad idea to mimic their business model; take ideas from their website or social media pages when you form your own company.

You’ll also need to set up a website to help your customers or clients find you. You can do this on your own, or find a freelance website designer to help you. If you’re selling a service such as writing, consider adding a portfolio to provide examples of your work. If you’re hoping to become a tutor, discuss your qualifications and subject specialties.

Business structure tips

When you’re ready to launch, consider what business structure would be best for your company. Many entrepreneurs choose to start a limited liability company or LLC because it offers flexibility, tax advantages, and will protect your personal assets.

You can avoid expensive lawyer’s fees by doing the business paperwork yourself or finding a formation service to help you. Before getting too deep into the process, determine what regulations you’ll need to follow to be compliant in your state.

Work/life balance with kids

The highly sought-after work/life balance can be hard for many to achieve, but it will be much easier if you establish good habits at the get-go. If you have a partner, ask them to help you share responsibilities such as grocery shopping, chores, childcare, and more.

First of all, try to stick to a schedule. If you have young kids, this might be a little trickier, as kids are pretty unpredictable in their needs. However, you can take advantage of naptime to get work done and invest in a laptop so you can sneak in extra work when you have a bit of downtime.

If your kids are older, establish some boundaries around your schedule. For kids who go to school, it will be easier for stay home moms to get work done while the kids are in school. However, if your child homeschools, you’ll need to establish a consistent schedule that will allow you to focus for designated periods of time throughout the day.

Working from home is great for most moms; when you run your own business you can take as much time off as you need. Just be sure to find a business that genuinely interests you, and take some time to set up a website and social media pages to help you land your first customers. Finally, remember to establish boundaries and a regular schedule to help you stay on track and make your business successful.
