One of the best parts of the new year is the feeling of newness we have. It gives a sense of energy, of being able to achieve new things. It’s an invigorating time of year, and there are so many reasons to take advantage of that clean slate to set goals and try to make 2019 the best year possible. One of the most popular goals you see year after year is weight loss and fitness oriented goals. January is the perfect time to begin a fitness journey because it motivates you to work towards your goals in time for swimsuit season. But maybe you don’t know where to start? Here are a few ideas to help you jumpstart your new year fitness goals!
Try out a group fitness class
If you feel a bit lost walking into a gym, and aren’t sure where to start or even how to do anything, you may want to consider taking a group fitness class. This is a great way to find a group of like-minded people to work out with and helps you find a community. Group fitness is also a fun way to burn calories and get active. And with so many different types of group fitness classes out there, there is absolutely something for everyone. If you’re an exercise novice, try spending some time trying lots of different classes, until you find something that you really love and wouldn’t mind doing a few times a week.
Set up a space to work out in your garage
One of the biggest things that hold people back from meeting their fitness goals, is that they don’t have the time to go to the gym multiple times a week. Whether it’s because your only free time is when your toddler is napping, or you share a car with your partner, or that you work weird hours that make it inconvenient to go to the gym. There are dozens of reasons and excuses to prolong the time before you bite the bullet and get started on your fitness journey. Although it may seem inconvenient, try working out at home. You can clear a space in your bedroom, living room, or even garage to lift some weights and do a few jumping jacks.
Find a friend to go on weekly walks with
If you haven’t ever worked out regularly before, you may want to start slow and ease yourself into the process. Find a friend in your neighborhood who would maybe be willing to go on a walk with you every day. Or, put your kid into a stroller, or your dog on a leash(and maybe a sweater), put on a favorite podcast, and head out on a walk. Walking a mile or so every day is the perfect way to accustom your body to exercise and burn a few calories, and toning muscles before you head to the gym to sign up for a membership.
Have a workout buddy
Having someone to keep you accountable and make sure that you do your weekly workouts is one of the best ways to stay motivated. Maybe find a friend who has similar fitness goals to you, and set up a time to work out together a few times a week. If you don’t have someone nearby, or someone who has a similar schedule to you, find someone who you can still contact and keep each other accountable. Text them every time you make it to the gym, with a summary of what you did or a link to the workout you accomplished. In turn, they’ll do the same. Sharing your progress with one another, even if it’s remotely, is a great way to ensure you stay on track with all of your new year fitness goals.
