Oh, Baby: How To Help Stressed Out New Parents Relax

Has a friend or family member recently welcomed a new bundle of joy into their family? While starting a family is a wonderful thing, there’s no denying those first few months can be hectic and stress-inducing. As one-time new parents yourself, you can probably relate!

Have you noticed the new parents have been rundown as of late? There are a few ways you can help them unwind during this exciting but busy time. If you’re wondering how to help stressed-out new parents relax, here are some tips and tricks.

Offer Your Expertise

You’re a parent, too, so you know how hard raising a child can be. An experienced parent’s words of wisdom can come in handy for new parents. Maybe you know a trick for soothing a crying baby or a tip for successful multi-tasking.

If the new parents are having a tricky time with a particular task and you know a potential solution, it doesn’t hurt to let them know. Worst case scenario, your suggestion doesn’t work. Best case scenario, it does!

That said, tread carefully. Don’t act like your way is unerring; a plain and humble “hey, this worked for me, maybe it’s worth a shot” will do!

Send a Care Package

A thoughtful gift basket can mean a lot to new parents. But what should you include in this care package? You have plenty of options! Here are a few recommendations:

  • Self-care supplies (bath bombs, lotion, candles, Epsom salt, etc.)
  • Postpartum supplies (ice pad, medicinal wipes, witch hazel pads, etc.)
  • Streaming service subscription
  • Food delivery gift card
  • Books and magazines
  • Snacks
  • Wine
  • Notes of encouragement

You don’t want to leave the new family member out, so include a small surprise for the baby as well, like a stuffed animal or a new bib.

Lend a Listening Ear

Sometimes, we just need to spill our hearts out to someone. After ranting and raving, it feels like a weight has lifted off our shoulders! Providing a listening ear is another excellent way to help stressed-out new parents relax.

Carve out a few minutes of your day to text or call your friend or family member and offer them your unconditional love and good wishes.

Invite Them Out

Most new parents spend their time cooped up at home. But just one night out can make a huge difference in their stress levels. If you have the time, why not offer to babysit for a few hours so the new parents can have a date night? You can also invite them and the baby over to your house or a child-friendly establishment.

These are our top tips for helping new parents unwind. Even the simplest gesture can mean a lot to a parent that feels tired and overwhelmed!
